Workshops

Workshops

Pulse, a unique improvisation-based percussion workshop full of creativity, energy and fun.

Conductors/percussionists Remco Menting and Eli Wing playfully challenge their students to explore their creativity and - together with the other students - build an entirely original piece of music based on what arises in that very moment.
In this process everyone is equally important, though the conductor has a guiding role. To this purpose, the hand sign language Rhythm and Percussion with Signs  is used, developed by the Argentinian musician
Santiago Vazquez. Dozens of percussion groups and workshop forms worldwide have formed as a consequence of this language, and Remco Menting brought it to the Netherlands.

Santiago Vazquez has put together a specific set of instruments for this way of making music. The percussion instruments, which come from all over the world, have their own role within the full line-up.  They complement each other in sound, pitch and function, which is particularly suitable for the process of improvisation.

Because the language is taught constructively, the workshop is suitable for everyone: from young to old, and from absolute beginners to professionals.

The workshop lasts 2 hours and is suitable for a group of 7-15 participants. This can be done once or as a series.
Both the conductors Remco Menting and Eli Wing have the full range of instruments and will provide this in the workshop.

In addition to the workshop, Pulse is also offered as:

Team building: Remco has developed a team building variant especially for companies.

Weekly lessons: Pulse is offered as a weekly lesson in Amsterdam and Utrecht. You can register individually for this.

Teambuilding

Remco Menting has developed a workshop type especially for companies that want to focus on team building. In this variant of the workshop, extra attention is paid to the following aspects:

First of all, making music stimulates creativity. By being absorbed in the moment while making music and coming out of your head completely, you experience a freedom of thought and feeling that inspires and can lead to new ideas. This process is catalysed by the incredible energy that is released by drumming.

The workshop also promotes mutual cooperation. In making music, this is completely different than in the workplace: making music stimulates communication on a non-verbal and intuitive level. The common goal of making beautiful music can only be achieved if everyone listens to each other, and if everyone is willing to adjust their own sounds for the benefit of the whole. The better that succeeds, the greater one's own and general satisfaction.

The workshop also shows that a common goal with different divisions of roles can be achieved. By regularly rotating between the instruments during the workshop, this division of roles is flexible. There is no hierarchy within the group, which is necessary for making improvised music together. Everyone's individual function is an essential link in the whole.

But perhaps the most important thing about the team building workshop is that it is binding. Making music together is inextricably linked to an experience of collaboration that creates a bond. The participants get to know each other in a different way, rise above themselves and inspire each other.

The Pulse teambuilding workshop can be given on location, for example as part of a whole day programme. A recommendation is  Bartmanzboot in Loenen aan de Vecht. Feel free to contact for more information and/or quote.
Weekly lessons

Pulse can also be followed weekly in Amsterdam and Utrecht. Participants can register individually for a series of 10 lessons. Because it’s a series, there is time and space to use many more symbols than in a single workshop. The participants can also learn to conduct themselves if they wish.

The lessons cost 20 euros per person per lesson of 2 hours. Registration is via the contact form
